Research Summary

While researching my topic on domestic violence, I was able to a lot that may help someone or myself in the future. Domestic violence is not one simple conversation or easy to identify. One has to know the signs, the laws, and the ways to help, discreetly. I have learned that there are not just two common forms of domestic violence but 10 common and serious types, such as physical, emotional, financial abuse and more. In the midst of digging deeper into my research, I have realized that women and other victims feel truly helpless in these situations. Their abusers have manipulated them so deeply that they think they cannot get out of these situations and it is truly heartbreaking. It is even more heartbreaking learning that many countries like India, Pakistan, and many other asian countries, accept this because it is part of their culture. It is a cultural thing to abuse wives and children and they have no power to do help themselves. Learning more about domestic violence, all I want is to spread more awareness and help in any way I can.

Post 5: Make a Plan

My project is about domestic violence against women in the United States and other foreign countries. In order for my project to be successful, I need to first understand what domestic violence is, what the signs are, and why it happens. I especially need to research the type of ways to help the victims of domestic violence in case I ever am in a situation where a person or myself will need help. The facets of my topic include but not limited to gender, history, and foreign countries. The facets of my topic include but not limited to gender, history, and foreign countries. Domestic violence is something that happens all over the world and I think it is important to figure out why it is tolerated in so many countries. Gender and history play a big role because so many domestic violence cases are focused on one gender when really it can happen to both man and woman. As for history, domestic violence has been a talked about for ages and still no solution or progress for the problem. In order to successfully discuss this topic, I need to under the reasoning for each facet.

Post 4: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga is a perfect example of intersectionality. She is an extremely talented artist who made herself known to be controversial. In the beginning of her career, she purposely expressed herself in such a way that society would categorize as “strange” “weird” “different. Only because she went against the norm most people were familiar with. Apparently if you are different, you are weird. However, the purpose of her behavior and looks, in my opinion, was to show people that it was okay to be different and true to who you are. To me, it made me feel like it didnt matter how you dressed or how people thought of you as long as you were comfortable in your own skin.

Post 3: Gender, Identity, Intersectionality

Most people go their whole lives struggling to find their own identity. Identity makes you who you are, it is like the title of a book and you are the story. From the minute we are born, everyone in our lives try to create our identity for us. Our families tell us who we should be, how we should act, what a good career or bad career is. Society itself tries to dictate the type of person you should be. However, identity should be made up of all the experiences one has. The way you think, the way you end up acting, and what makes you happy should be the main components of forming your identity and you alone should be the one to decide who you want to be.

What is Gender?

According to Google, “gender” is a “range of characteristics pertaining to and differentiating between femininity and masculinity.” In order words when talking about gender you are either talking about “man” or “woman”, “male” and “female”. Society manages it by separating the two. To society, you can only be either one, whether male or female. However, gender in reality is a social construct and is made up. Society enforces gender roles by setting values, rules, and categories that are put under female/woman and a set under male/man. For example, the color pink, dolls, and being “sensitive” is categorized under female status. Whereas blue, sports, and being “strong” is categorized under a male status.

Power and privilege plays a big role in gender. Research and data shows that men benefit the most out of the two sexes. Men are paid more, respected more and face fewer obstacles than women do. Why this is, is a question that is asked every day.

There should be no limit on just the two genders. There can be as many genders as one wishes. The term and idea is made up by men from ages ago. One can and should be any gender they please and feel most comfortable with.
