Gender Pay Gaps

Within my research study, I have learned about gender inequality within the work field. Women are constantly battling for equality for the same amount work that a man completes. Even til today, women in all parts of the world are struggling to take a stand for themselves because it may conflict with law, religion and etc. Within my study, I will be displaying how gender inequality is seen throughout the world.

Queen of the south, the main character Teresa Mendoza fits the role of power and multiple identities. I admired this show because it idolized a women as the main character and she was reaching her way up to be one of the most biggest drug lords in Colombia and in the states. Within the show, her role played both masculine and feminine. This is not usually seen because most shows use men to play the scary boss or the person who “calls the shots”. Instead, the main character who is a women has several identities where she’s nurturing, heartwarming and then switches to be very violent (Killing, fighting off enemies, stealing, handling illegal drugs/money). Mendoza uses her power to get her cartel swarming throughout the country, she becomes a multimillionaire who helps out her family who’s less fortunate. This creates a lot of hate and completion against her because she’s a women and she’s overtaking a male dominate field.

Make A Plan

Topic: Gender Pay gaps

Option: Syllabus project

Throughout this project, to get better intake on this topic I would need to do research on gender pay gaps and how it affected the community of women. I would need scholarly articles and texts to justify the factual evidence. To find evidence of gender gaps, I can use videos, textbooks, journals and articles. Academically, I can lean toward history/social studies articles to go back into history to research. Throughout the syllabus, I will make sure to not only include readings and articles, I would include movies, short videos or even go on trips/virtual trips to give students a better interpretation of what is being taught. Gender pay gaps were noticed about centuries ago and it is something women still face in society. This topic correlates with women studies because the economical and social growth has adjusted to society and shaped itself in its own form. Throughout the “class” we will be gaining more intake on how women are constantly unnoticed in the work fields.

NOTE TO PROFESSOR:

I emailed the following assignment to you. I am just putting it here to be on the safe side as well.

Question: In what ways do you get choose your identity? In what ways is it chosen for you? Do you notice a trend in who gets to decide which aspects? Do any identities or attributes/behaviors seem more managed or directed than others? By whom?

I personally feel like you’re born with whom you would like to identify yourself with. As you grow older and pass the many stages of development, you grow up to choose what fits you. At times you may feel an imbalance or something different about yourself that you cannot identify what it may be. You notice that you have different characteristics as the same sex as you. As you tend to get older, you get educated enough to understand yourself. Society will take a toll on an individuals mental health because of the way the public eye view’s such things. They see things and they are quickly ready to judge. This on the other hand, leads to family and the many similarities that they share with society. Some family is quick to judge, so it pressures the individuals to constantly cover up who they are.

What is Gender?

As we all know, gender is based on birth and our biological parts. Gender ranges by our characteristics in which we portray feminie or masuline personality traits. Our society frequently enforces gender roles, we’ve seen it before coming out the womb aka gender reveals, we see it in clothing stores, shows, work fields etc. Sadly, when you are pronounced to become a boy automatically you have a bunch of awaiting traits that you need to fulfill. For instance, men automatically need to be strong, breadwinner, self-reliant and etc. Women “need” to be soft, emotional and nurturing to be a “woman”. Gender and gender roles shape the way we live to today. However, gender has expanded to be more than just female and male.

Power and Privilege coincides with a large percentage of the male population. It is often found that men are more dominant and more opportunities are open for them. In many fields, you’ll see the majority of the ceo’s are white males. From the beginning of time, when voting came about women were not allowed until they protested and fought for their rights. It is also seen within many ethncities, for instance muslim women were forbidden to drive, or nigerian women were not allowed to divorce their husbands without their consent. Throughout many generations, men have held the dominance over every single thing. The way politics is set up, it is like its built that men possess and have the right to display such dominance. It is seen even within political work fields, such as our recent presidential election. It has taken years for us to have our FIRST women, as our vice president. Women face many obstacles throughout the work field and at home. Women face gender pay gaps, men creating laws about a woman’s body, sexual assault, in some countries many women need consent from their husbands before they do anything.

Over time, I have been taught that gender does not only mean girl or boy. It has an entire community filled with different stereotypes, preferences and over 64 genders that people can identify themselves with. It’s 2021, people should feel comfortable to express themselves and to do whatever makes them happy. Unfortunately, in our miserable society we have many people who have growing up to do , and accept that people blossom into new people everyday.
