The Master’s Tools

I agree with the statement that “the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house. The traditional feminist movement consists of white educated women who exclude minority groups. When Lorde wrote this essay, she was lamenting the feminist cause that excluded non-whites, lesbians, and the poor. In this manner they were doing exactly what white men have been doing, creating a society where their needs were dominant at the exclusion of everyone else, including white women. If we as women want to make progress and bring down a system that does not work for us, then we need to use methods that are different and inclusive.

Lorde wrote that “difference must be not merely tolerated, but seen as a fund of necessary polarities between which our creativity can spark like a dialectic”. In order to achieve our goals, we need to work together in spite of our differences, accept that we are not all the same and that is okay. We each have different experiences, backgrounds and goals, but if feminists have open dialogue and stop using the devices of the patriarchy we will accomplish much more together.
