My project is going to be about gender fluidity and sexuality in Indigenous culture. I am focusing on Hawaiian, Polynesian, and Filipino indigenous groups because those groups have the most evidence regarding this topic. It is difficult to research the history of other Indigenous groups due to colonialization. Colonizers often destroyed art and architecture thus, we do not have full access to the artifacts and traditions pertaining to some Indigenous groups around the globe. It is important to learn about gender expression and sexuality in a historical context because Western media had portrayed a narrow view of this topic. In Western society, being non-binary is perceived as something taboo, however, the concept of non-binary or genderqueer has been present in various ways throughout history, specifically in native cultures. I felt a mood board would fit this topic effectively. Using images to represent the pride as well as the struggle of Indigenous gender fluidity and sexuality is unique.

Hey Aiyana! I think research of this topic will be beneficial to understanding and perhaps undoing the colonization of gender in Indigenous cultures. I think it’s always interesting to see how perceptions of gender differs from culture to culture. I’m excited to see how you utilize a mood board to present your ideas.
