We get to choose our identities to some extent now because we can choose what we want to be addressed. If someone was born a male but they want to identify as a woman, they are able to do this vise versa, you are able to choose the pronouns that you want to identify as.Your identity is chosen for you as well because before you decide what you want to be identified as, society does it for you and sometimes people live in fear of embracing their true identity because of this. Male identities are more managed by others because a lot of people have fixed mindsets about how men should behave. Men are supposed to exhibit masculinity so they are closely monitored to ensure that they uphold this image.

Maisat, the way in which you described how someones identity comes to be about is what society depicts of us. The fact that society has programmed, in a way, this wrong mindset where if you were born a female then you have to try to stick with that. It’s unfair to the person where they might be born female but they feel more comfortable by identifying themselves to be male. This person shouldn’t have to live in fear that someone will negatively judge them when they are just trying to figure out their own identity. Also, the fact that men are sometimes criticized about whether or not they are “masculine enough” is not right either. Men don’t need to try to fit in with the definition of what a man does by society, they should live their own lives without having to worry about if they would be considered to be a “man” in society.
