For my project, I plan to research the statistics for crimes against women. There has recently been a trend on social media trying to raise awareness on the “97%” of women who experience sexual harassment. However, when such a big number is thrown around, many people try to invalidate it and argue against the number, saying the sample of women asked in this study was too small or inaccurate, or some other excuse. For this project, I would research different crimes against women, such as sexual crimes and domestic violence crimes, how often they happen vs. how often some kind of justice is served, when and where they seem more likely to happen (sexual harassment crimes), and how society reacts to accusations of such crimes. Lastly, I would also research how these crimes are solved, meaning how the police system is involved in them.
These issues can be looked at from a worldly standpoint as well. Comparing these crimes and their reaction throughout the world is something I would look at, seeing as crimes are approached differently in different cultures. Lastly, I would research protests relating to these issues, as well as the concerns around performative activism and victim-blaming.
