Nowadays before a child is born the parents often have a gender reveal party. This party is held to reveal the sex of the child in the presence of friends and family. The theme is either blue or pink. Where pink is for girls and blue is for boys. So before a child is even born society has already put a label on what gender the child is just based on sex. Everyday children are exposed to societal norms. From the toys and clothes made for boys only and girls only to the sports that are for girls and the ones for boys. Parents play a huge role too. But when you think deeper about the idea of what is a boy and what is a girl the conversation gets more intense. Girls are princesses and boys are knights. Boys lift weights and girls do yoga. Today you can see how the different roles have integrated. You can find more men doing yoga now and more women bodybuilders. I Identify as a boy and all the societal preconceptions of what a boy is. I enjoy playing sports, I enjoy cartoons and I enjoy working out. I was never confused about my identity but I know there are many who do struggle with it. Girls who don’t like “girly” stuff and just want to be one of the guys. Boys who don’t like playing sports but who much rather keep their hands clean. Today, one can ultimately choose their identity based on what feels comfortable and not based on what society deems right.
