In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald in 2020, Lucy Liu has spoken out about feeling like a “black sheep” in Hollywood. The star of Charlie’s Angels remembered how her auditions went during her first year in the career. and how she saw herself as being more “naive” than “driven,” when discussing the challenges she faced as an Asian actor in Hollywood. Her ethnicity would be used to judge her in the acting industry. She stated that, “I think I was just too naive and didn’t realize what I was getting myself into,” she explained. “I knew it was going to be much more limited for me when I got to LA because a friend of mine would have 10 auditions in a day or a week and I would only have two or three in a month,” she says. It’s really upsetting to see how these industries discriminate based on racial backgrounds. The problems Lucy faced were just diversity related. Regardless of their celebrity status, racism exists on a spectrum and affects all BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color), on a daily basis.
